Hello! And welcome to the Flyerz section of the Stevenage Hockey Club.
From January 2014, Stevenage Hockey Club will be running an exciting new section of the club, Stevenage Flyerz, aimed at children, young people and adults with any disability. This will be an opportunity for people with a disability to come along and try hockey in a safe and inclusive environment.
We will be running weekly sessions on a Sunday morning alongside our family session. This will provide an opportunity for the whole family to attend and get involved. Sessions will be run by Claire Young, L2 hockey coach and Ladies 1st XI captain, and Tony Farnan, L1 coach and Junior liaison for Stevenage Hockey Club, both of whom have full DBS checks and current safeguarding training. We also have a number of volunteers from the hockey club who will help at each session.
Details for the sessions are as follows:
· Sunday 10am – 11am
· Nobel School, Mobbsbury Way, Stevenage, SG2 0HS (astroturf)
· No booking required
· Sticks and balls will be provided
· Taster sessions will be free of charge.
We were keen to set up a disability section at Stevenage Hockey club after visiting Waltham Hockey Club who are the first club in the UK to set up a disability section (The Forest Flyerz). Their players have a mixed age range and level of disability. Our aspiration is to make disability hockey available within Hertfordshire. We even hope to enter a team into an annual disability hockey tournament run by the Forest Flyerz, which aims to give experience of competitive hockey to all. Last year the tournament was a fantastic event and attracted around 250 peeople, with 50+ disabled players.
